Crafting joy from Scotland's wilderness

Hello, I'm Sientje

The work I create for Highland Sea Ceramics is deeply influenced by Scotland and its rugged wilderness, its wide open and empty spaces, unreliable weather and a myriad of rainbows. I choose colours in my glazes that reflect the natural world and seasons around me – from plants that grow along the coastline and in the hills, to misty mountains, and the beautiful Northern Lights, that often can be seen during the winter months.

When I don’t make pottery, I spend much of my time exploring the countryside, usually with a pot or two in my bag pack. My hope is that my love for pottery and Scotland shows in the pots I create and will bring you joy using them.

PROCESS

Every single one of my pots is handmade from start to finish. They are made from stoneware clay and thrown by hand on the potter’s wheel. They are then trimmed and handled if required, before being bisque fired. The glazes are applied in different layers, giving each piece a beautiful depth of colour, before being fired again during the glaze firing. As a result, each piece is one of a kind.
